Stacking Qantas Bonus Points: The Credit Card Rotation Strategy for Free Flights with Qantas.
Turn everyday spending into Qantas Points by strategically rotating credit cards, stacking bonus points and maximising your rewards for future Qantas flights
Get a new credit card → meet the minimum spend → collect the bonus points → cancel the card when appropriate → move to the next card.
Many Australian credit cards have new customer bonus restrictions, meaning you may need to wait a certain period before becoming eligible for another bonus from the same bank or card family.
By rotating between different banks, you can keep collecting large bonus-point offers over time.
Important: Bonus eligibility rules are different for every card. Always check the current offer terms before applying, including how long you must wait before being eligible for another bonus and whether cancelling the card affects eligibility.

Option 1: Fast Plan for 710,000 Bonus Points

How the Fast Rotation Works
Step 1 — Open & Spend
Open one new card at a time. Put your normal everyday spending — bills, groceries, fuel and other eligible purchases — on the card until you reach the required spending target.
Step 2 — Collect the Bonus
Once you’ve met the requirements, wait for the bonus points to be credited to your Qantas account.
Some cards in this strategy provide additional points in Year 2, so those cards need to be kept longer.
Step 3 — Cancel at the Right Time
Once you’ve received everything you’re targeting, cancel the card when appropriate so you don’t unnecessarily continue paying annual fees.
Step 4 — Move to the Next Card
Move your spending to the next card in the rotation.
As you work through different banks, enough time may eventually pass for you to become eligible for earlier bonus offers again — but always check the specific card’s eligibility rules before reapplying.
Option 2: Slow & Easy Plan for 470,000 Bonus Points
Best for: People who want a simpler strategy, lower fees and don’t want to constantly change cards.
Instead of aggressively opening cards throughout the year, this approach uses around one or two cards per year.
| Time | Credit Card & Bank | Total Fee | Fee Offset | Effective Cost | Spend Goal | Points You Get | How to Get Your Bonus Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 — Card A | Qantas Money Platinum | $349 | — | $349 | $5,000 | 80,000 | Spend the money, get 80,000 points, and cancel at Month 11. |
| Year 1 — Card B | Westpac Altitude Qantas Black | $450 | — | $450 | $6,000 | 90,000 | Get 90,000 points. Skip Year 2 and cancel the card at Month 11. |
| Year 2 — Card A | St. George Amplify Signature | $450 | — | $450 | $6,000 | 90,000 | Spend the money, get 90,000 points, and cancel at Month 11. |
| Year 2 — Card B | NAB Qantas Rewards Signature | $420 | $250 cash | $170 | $5,000 | 100,000 | Get 100,000 points + $250 cash back, then cancel at Month 11. |
| Year 3 — Card A | Amex Qantas Ultimate | $450 | $450 flight credit* | $0* | $5,000 | 70,000 | Get 70,000 points, use the $450 flight credit, and cancel before Year 2. |
| Year 3 — Card B | ANZ Frequent Flyer Black | $425 | — | $425 | $6,000 | 40,000 | Easy points. Earlier waiting periods may now be finished, subject to current eligibility rules. |
| 3-YEAR TOTAL | ~$2,544 | $700* | ~$1,844* | $33,000 | 470,000 | Low cost, simple, and lots of points. |
How the Slow & Easy Rotation Works
Step 1 : Start with Card A
Open Card A at the beginning of the year. Reach the spending requirement, collect the bonus points, and aim to cancel around Month 11 before another annual fee becomes payable.
Step 2 : Switch to Card B
Open Card B during the second half of the year. Meet its first-year spending requirement, collect the bonus and cancel around Month 11 if you don’t intend to keep the card.
Step 3 : Avoid Unnecessary Year 2 Fees
The idea is to complete the bonus requirements and cancel before another annual fee is charged — provided the card’s terms allow this without affecting your bonus eligibility.
Step 4 : Continue the Loop
Move on to the next bank in Year 2 and Year 3.
Over time, enough time may pass for earlier cards to become available to you again, depending on each bank’s current new-customer rules.
Simple Rules to Keep Collecting Points
Rule 1 : Start With the Best First Time Deal
If a card has a particularly attractive new bcustomer offer, consider starting with it.
For example, the Qantas Money Platinum offer in this strategy includes additional points for eligible new users.Always check the current eligibility conditions before applying.
Rule 2 : Know the Waiting Period
Don’t assume that every bank uses the same 18- or 24-month rule.
The relevant waiting period can differ between cards and offers, so check the exact terms before you apply again.
Rule 3 : Don’t Apply Just for Points
Only use this strategy if you can comfortably meet the minimum spending requirement without spending more than you normally would.
The goal is to earn bonus points from your existing spending — not create unnecessary debt or interest.
Rule 4 : Track Your Cards
Keep a simple record of:
- Application date
- Minimum spending deadline
- Bonus points received
- Annual fee
- Cancellation date
- When you may next become eligible for a bonus
This makes the rotation much easier to manage.
Rule 5 : Pay the Balance in Full
The biggest rule of all:
Never pay credit card interest just to earn points.
If interest charges outweigh the value of your bonus points, the strategy is no longer worth it.
$39K Over 3 Years Sounds Like a Lot. But What If It’s Just Your Normal Spending?
Spend around $10K–$13K a year, rotate through different cards, and potentially stack 710,000 bonus points over three years. Is it worth it?
